Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the best gorilla trekking destination in Africa and the most popular national park in Uganda tucked away in the southwestern Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park also known as Bwindi Forest National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the incredible biodiversity protected within its perimeters spanning 331 square kilometers, this rugged landscape varies in altitude from 1,160 to 2,607 metres above sea level. The park is situated within the Albertine Rift, a region renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, thus contributing to its richness of life.

Bwindi Forest is nature’s Eden boasting an incredible collection of wildlife species with over 120 mammal species including the endangered mountain gorillas, elusive forest elephants and playful chimpanzees. The park is also a birder haven with over 350 bird species, there is also over 200 different species of butterflies to marvel about. Bwindi also hosts an impressive flora with over 1,000 flowering plant species, including 163 tree species and 104 fern species.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is recognized as one of the most biologically diverse forests on the African continent.

Mountain Gorillas

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a habitat to approximately 460 mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), which is half of the world’s total population of these critically endangered great ape species. Bwindi’s park authorities have successfully habituated 20 gorilla groups making them open for the unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four different gorilla trekking sectors; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo where visitors can go for gorilla trekking. Each of these sectors offer a unique experience and glimpse into the lives of these giant apes in their natural habitat.

Mountain gorillas are social animals living in groups/families known as troops led by a dominant silverback, the dense forest of provides an ideal sanctuary for these gentle giants to thrive offering abundant sources of food such as leaves, fruits and steams. Mountain gorillas can consume up to an impressive 75 pounds of vegetation each day and are known to construct nests every in trees and on the ground where they spend the night.

Wildlife in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

In addition to the endangered and iconic mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is sanctuary to other fascinating mammals including forest elephants, chimpanzees, stinking black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys among others. The park is home to approximately 120 mammal species.

Birdlife in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is a birdwatcher’s paradise with approximately 350 bird species recorded within its boundaries, many of these species are endemic or rare such as the African green broadbill and Grauer’s swamp warbler. Other bird species found in Bwindi Forest include Ruwenzori Nightjar,Red-throated Alethe,African Green Broadbill,Red-faced Woodland Warbler,Handsome Francolin,Short-tailed Warbler,Collared Apalis,Mountain Masked Apalis,Archer’s Robin-Chat,Dawrf Honey guide,Grauer’s Warbler,Dusky Crimsonwing,RwenzoriBatis,Purple-breasted Sunbird,Regal Sunbird,Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Strip-breasted Tit,Blue-headed Sunbird,Grauer’s Rush Warbler,RwenzoriTuraco,Strip-breasted Tit,Kivu Ground Thrush,Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, and the Strange Weaver among others.

Other Fauna in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is also home to a wide range of range of reptiles and amphibians, including 27 species of frogs, chameleons, and geckos. The insect life in Bwindi is also fascinating with over 310 butterfly species recorded.

Gorilla Trekking Experience

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas that is why it is ranked as the best place for gorilla trekking in Africa. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is done daily and is the most popular Uganda safari activity in the park, all visitors have to be in possession of a gorilla permit to take part in this once-in-a life time wildlife experience.

The treks starts early in morning with briefing at the park headquarters (depending on the sector), where a ranger guide takes you through rules and regulations to follow while in the forest and presence of the gorillas. Only 8 people from the age of 15 years can trek each habituated gorilla family in Bwindi, with a ranger guide you trek through the uneven terrain of Bwindi looking for mountain gorillas. The trek takes approximately 2 to 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night, you are allowed to spend only one hour with their presence. At a distance of at least 8 meters, you will watch them go on with their life in the forest, feed, play and groom each other among others.

Gorilla Habituation Experience 

Gorilla Habituation Experience is a one of a kind gorilla experience allowing visitors to spend more time with the endangered mountain gorillas. Visitors get a chance to move with experienced trackers and primate researchers and scientists who share information about gorilla habituation process and current issues related to gorilla conservation.

Unlike gorilla trekking, the troop visited on this experience is semi-habituated. So you will get a chance to witness how the gorillas are trained to get used to human presence, notice their different characteristics and names. 

Bird Watching

With about 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics and 14 species recorded nowhere in Africa, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a prime Uganda birding spot and was named as Africa’s number one birding spot by Africa Bird Club. In company of excellent birder and guide you will see several bird species including Grauer’s broadbill, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Shelley’s Crimson-wing. More species include; Handsome Francolin, Mountain-masked and Collared Apalis, White-bellied Robin Chat, Black billed Turaco, Fraser’s Eagle, Western Bronze-naped Pigeon, Purple-breasted, Blue-headed and Regal Sunbirds among others.

Hiking and Guided Nature Walks

There are various trails running through the forest used on hiking and guided nature walks, this experience offers the best way to explore and experience the impenetrable Bwindi Forest to the forest. Different trails lead to beautiful waterfalls where you can take a dive in the clear water, these walks are done with armed guides and rangers.

  • Buhoma – Nkuringo Trail which takes 4-5 hours crossing through the National Park
  • Rushara Hill Walk – a trail through the forest shared between Congo and Uganda
  • Muyanga Waterfall Walk
  • Ivi River Walk – a trail of 14 kilometers and takes about 7 hours of hiking
  • Muzubijiro Loop – a trail of 6 km walk around the hill where you have chances of seeing several primate species and birds.

Cultural Encounters

The local communities surrounding Bwindi Forest offers enriching activities and cultural experiences for visitors to enjoy. The Batwa Experience takes you to the Batwa-pygmy people – the forest people who once lived harmoniously with mountain gorillas for many year, here you will be get an insight on how they used to live in the forest, be entertained by local dances and drama, visit the medicine man among others.

You can also tour the village Aquaponis project with Conservation through Public Health (CTPH), primary schools among others. 

Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a year round destination, however the best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June to August and December to February). These months coincide with the peak tourism seasons for Bwindi, as they offer the most comfortable conditions for gorilla trekking. The trails are drier making gorilla trekking easier and more enjoyable, and the weather is generally sunnier with lower malaria risk.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Getting to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on a Uganda Safari can be done by air and road options.

By Road: Traveling is the most commonly used mode of transport to get to Bwindi, from Kampala, Uganda’s Capital, it is a journey of 9 to 10 hours covering approximately 550 kilometers. Bwindi can also be accessed from Kigali, Rwanda which is about 3 hours’ drive with a quick border passage.

By Air: Flying is the quickest way to get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, there are several domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield in Kampala to Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips, then connect to the park on an 1 hour’s drive.
